Assateague Island

Spring Spotlight

This year’s spring spotlight focuses on the Assateague Island National Seashore in Berlin, Maryland.

Assateague Island is a wonderful destination for wildlife enthusiasts and beachgoers to visit in the springtime.

Assateague is a long barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia, known for its fantastic beaches and unique wildlife.

The national seashore includes bayside and oceanside drive-in campgrounds and an oversized over-sand vehicle (OSV) zone with miles of unspoiled beaches and dunes to accommodate offroad enthusiasts.

On most days you’ll get the chance to see wild Chincoteague ponies beside the roads, along trails, in the water, and on the beaches.

Be sure to keep your distance, because these four-legged friends are wild animals, and they can be dangerous.

Remember, feeding any wildlife on the island is prohibited.

The ocean side of the island offers a long pristine beach with sections for swimming, surfing, and fishing.

Bring your kayak or paddle board to the bay side for calmer waters and spectacular sunset views.

Hike the land between the beaches on trails that wind through marshland, dunes, and pine forest.

Assateague Island National Seashore provides waterside picnic tables, lifeguard services, and modern facilities that include sinks, toilets, and indoor and outdoor showers.
