McKittrick Canyon

The Most Beautiful Place in Texas?

This year’s autumn spotlight focuses on McKittrick Canyon in Guadalupe Mountains National Park.  McKittrick Canyon is a beautiful place to visit in the fall, with a multitude of flowers in bloom through September and brilliantly colorful foliage from October to early November. A short hike on the peaceful trails is enough to understand why many people call McKittrick Canyon the most beautiful place in Texas.

McKittrick Canyon Trail

The McKittrick Canyon Trail is a 2-to-6-hour hike on a gravel path with a gradual ascent.

The canyon is located in arid west Texas, so dress accordingly and bring plenty of drinking water.

Remember, pack out what you bring in.

McKittrick Canyon is a desert oasis with rare ice age flora and breathtaking views.

Come September, the canyon is full of wildflowers of every color in full autumn bloom.

Note: These flowers are an integral part of a fragile ecosystem and should not be touched.

The Guadalupe Mountains rise up over the Chihuahuan desert in arid west Texas.

There are plenty of tranquil places to sit and relax along the trail.

Notice how the southwestern fence lizard (Sceloporus cowlesi) blends in.

A female Chihuahuan greater earless lizard (Cophosaurus t. scitulus).

Some flowers may be just starting to bloom.

While others are just past their peak.
